MAURY

A pretty village situated in the valley below the Queribus Castle, Maurys history was firmly linked to this Cathar fortress until the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659), when the Roussillon became part of France .

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Maury developed its main industry around the production of an exceptional naturally sweet wine that gained an AOC rating as " Maury " in 1936.

The vineyard stretches over steep hills, on a soil composed mainly of schistose marl, which is conducive to the cultivation of vines.

In this exceptional environment, the scenery around Maury is a remarkable and natural spectacle of hills, valleys, vineyards and Mediterranean forest.

At the edge of the village, on the road leading up to the Cathar castles, there is a pleasant relaxation area. From here you can take the mountain bike trail and discover the local fauna and a host of Mediterranean plants. If you continue you will soon arrive at the last of the Cathar strongholds ...

Maury has become a cultural centre, for instance there is a pleasant and interesting walk around the streets of Maury following a circuit of ‘trompe l'oeil’ paintings on the walls of houses and municipal buildings, you can visit the « Toutes Toiles Dehors » exhibition or the popular pottery market during the summer season.

Every year in June, the “Voix des Femmes” (Voices of Women) Festival hosts an array of female artists and musicians from all over the world.

More information is available from the local tourist office.
