Historical village at the crossroads of several ancient communication routes, Fenouillet rises to 530 meters on a rocky outcrop between the St. Jaume Gorges and the Boucheville Forest.
This location gives it a strong strategic position, notwithstanding the presence of the Castle of St. Peter which dates back to before the year 800, and which was the seat of a Viscount, successively belonging to the Counts of Toulouse, Barcelona and the Kings of Aragon. Two lines of fortifications, the two castles Castel Fizel and Sabarda once protected the village.
Through out its long history, Fenouillet has retained the traces of its castle, which is a rare example of military architecture, and remained undisturbed by the crusade against the Cathars. Archaeological campaigns have led to a significant enhancement of this heritage.
Situated at the foot of the Boucheville forest, a pleasant visit to this historic village is a good starting point for the many hiking trails and mountain biking trails
